CANTM – The Ceredigion Association of National Trust Members was formed in 1991. Its main aims and objectives are simple, firstly, to support the charitable aims of the National Trust here in Ceredigion and secondly, to help National Trust members here in Ceredigion to maximise the enjoyment from their membership. However, it should be added that membership of the National Trust, although desirable, is not a prerequisite for membership of CANTM (non National Trust members are, of course, required to pay admission charges for National Trust properties on any CANTM outings). Also, membership of CANTM is not about Volunteering. Although some of our members are involved in volunteer work with the National Trust, the vast majority are not.

Part of our remit is to raise money for the National Trust but we stipulate we want the money raised used here, in Ceredigion. Some of our events especially in January and February have a fund raising element and we are proud to say we have raised over £40,000 since 1991. Much of the money donated has gone to Llanerchaeron and is usually for a specific item rather than going ‘into the pot’. Donations have been used to buy garden seats, mowers, a trailer and a portrait of William Lewis who commissioned John Nash to build Llanerchaeron. CANTM have also donated money to schemes in Mwnt to contribute towards maintaining the National Trust lands and car park there.

What we do

So, what do we do?

That could well be a question you are asking yourself. We have a very full and active programme which includes talks, especially in the Winter months at various locations in Ceredigion. In Spring and Summer we concentrate on trips and outings that often take us far beyond the borders of Ceredigion. We visit properties and gardens across Wales and the Borders that are part of the National Trust and other properties, gardens and locations that may not be part of the National Trust but have something of interest. There is at least one away trip a year of four nights – five days staying at a comfortable hotel well situated to visit numerous properties and locations of interest. These are coach trips, run in-house and in the past we have visited the Peak District, Cornwall, North Wales, Dorset, Somerset and Devon and Lake District.

Just before Christmas every year we have a festive activity (with sherry and mince pies) and a regular event in February is the ‘Winter Warmer’ designed to “warm the cockles of your heart” with ‘cawl’ following a talk by a speaker. There is something of interest nearly every month as the Programme Committee endeavour to provide something of interest on a monthly basis for at least ten months of the year. We have an Annual Lunch and if the occasion warrants it then we will have a Celebration Dinner too! We recently celebrated our 25th year with a Silver Jubilee Dinner.
